What is The Qur’aan?

Like the Torah and the Bible, the Qur’aan (sometimes spelled Quran, Koran, Coran) is revelation from our Lord and Creator. The Qur’aan is the final revelation, revealed to Muhammad, the last Messenger, in order to return people to the true monotheistic religion of all previous Prophets and Messengers. The Qur’an is still preserved in its original, Arabic language and is free from error, addition or subtraction. The fundamental message from our Creator in the Qur’aan is the same as that revealed in the previous scriptures; to worship not but God, not to associate partners in worship with Him and to enjoin good and forbid evil. This message was confirmed and implemented by His appointed Prophets and Messengers. And who believe in (the Qur’an and the Sunnah) which has been sent down (revealed) to you (Muhammad Peace be upon him) and in [the Turât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), etc.] which were sent down before you and they believe with certainty in the Hereafter. (Resurrection, recompense of their good and bad deeds, Paradise and Hell, etc.). [Qur’aan, 2:4]

What is Islam?

Islam is an Arabic word which means ‘surrender’. This means to accept the power of Allah, and follow His Commands. Happiness in this life and success in the life after death can only be obtained by obeying Allah. Islam is not just a religion, but a complete way of life. This means that it shows us how to live all aspects of our lives in the best possible way. There are five pillars on which Islam stands, they are: 1. To firmly believe in the heart and declare ‘Laa ilaaha illallaah, Muhammadur-Rasulullah’ “that there is no deity worthy to be worshiped but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.”. This is what is meant by Iman (Belief) 2. To pray five times a day (perform Salah). 3. To pay Zakat (Charity) 4. To fast during the month of Ramadhan. 5. To go on Hajj (pilgrimage) to Makkah once in a lifetime if one can afford it. A person who accepts Islam is called a Muslim. It means ‘one who surrenders.’ A Muslim is required to do all that Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) have asked of them, and to keep away from doing things which Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) have told not to do. Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) have told us to do good deeds, like being dutiful to our parents, helping others who are less fortunate and to be kind to animals. (Truly, the religion with Allah, is Islam – Qur’aan, 3:19).

Important Note

Please keep in mind ANY translation (interpretation) of the Qur’aan will most definitely contain errors. In its natural language (Arabic), the Qur’aan is the direct Word of Allaah (God) to mankind through the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Any translation of the Qur’aan no longer retains that ‘official’ and perfect status, however it can be tremendously helpful to beginning students wanting to learn more about Islaam. We would strongly encourage those want to learn about Islaam to purchase a hardcopy of the Qur’aan but with the following conditions:

1. Get one with commentary (e.g Tafseer ibn Kathir)
2. Make sure the commentary is scholarly (e.g. references to reasons behind a verse, references to hadith and sunnah (prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)’s teachings
